Somatic Practices
Somatic Practices offer several benefits for trauma healing by addressing the physiological and psychological effects of trauma on the body. These practices may include body movement through trauma-informed yoga, dance or fitness, mindfulness through plant-based healing and music, and empowerment and growth in connecting body and mind.
At Evans Counseling Services we strongly believe that trauma is healed best through community, while connecting the body, mind & spirit. Therefore, we offer a variety of therapeutic groups, workshops and retreats, specifically for trauma healing.
Benefits of Somatic Practices:
Holistic Healing
Somatic therapy takes a holistic approach to healing, recognizing the interconnectedness of the mind and body. It acknowledges that trauma is not just stored in the mind but also in the body, manifesting as physical sensations, tension, and somatic symptoms.
Regulation of the Nervous System
Trauma can dysregulate the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as hypervigilance, flashbacks, and dissociation. Through techniques such as breathwork, grounding exercises, and mindful movement, clients develop greater awareness of their bodily sensations and learn to self-regulate their arousal levels, promoting a sense of safety and calmness.
Release of Stored Trauma
Trauma often becomes stored in the body as muscular tension, chronic pain, or other somatic symptoms. Somatic therapy uses techniques such as somatic experiencing, sensorimotor psychotherapy, and bodywork to help clients release these physical manifestations of trauma. By gently exploring and processing bodily sensations, emotions, and memories, clients can gradually discharge stored trauma and restore a sense of ease and vitality in their bodies.
Integration of Mind-Body Connection
Through experiential exercises, mindfulness practices, and body awareness techniques, clients learn to cultivate a deeper understanding of how their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations are interconnected. This integration allows clients to develop greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and resilience in navigating their healing journey.
Empowerment & Resilience Building
Somatic therapy empowers clients to reclaim agency over their bodies and emotions, fostering a sense of empowerment and self-efficacy. By exploring and renegotiating boundaries, practicing self-care strategies, and building somatic resources, clients develop resilience and capacity to cope with the effects of trauma. Somatic therapy encourages clients to cultivate a compassionate relationship with themselves, fostering healing from within.
